The Manipulative Power of Algorithms
At its core, the theory posits that algorithms possess an unparalleled capacity to manipulate individuals by understanding their behaviors, preferences, and vulnerabilities. They achieve this by building comprehensive user profiles based on data derived from clicks, searches, and interactions. By tailoring content to our specific tastes and reinforcing our initial biases, algorithms gradually gain our trust. This initial alignment creates a comfort zone, where individuals feel understood and validated in their views.
However, this is merely the beginning. Over time, algorithms, particularly those behind social media and recommendation engines, shift their approach. Slowly, they introduce content that begins to challenge the user's initial beliefs, nudging them towards new perspectives — often in the opposite direction of their original stance. This tactic, known as gradual exposure, plays on the human tendency to seek cognitive consistency while also being susceptible to small, incremental changes. The result? Individuals may end up holding views they once deemed unimaginable.
Tech critic Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, highlights this vulnerability: "It's not just about what you click; it's about how every click is calculated to influence your next decision, even if that decision runs counter to your original intentions" (Harris, 2020).
The Role of "Ignorant Advertising"
This phenomenon of algorithmic manipulation becomes even more insidious when applied to advertising, particularly in the form of what I call ignorant advertising. In this approach, users are constantly bombarded with subtly crafted advertisements, many of which they don't actively engage with but are passively exposed to. Over time, these ads begin to shape the user's subconscious, embedding certain ideas or products as familiar and desirable.
Ignorant advertising allows corporations or political parties to influence individuals without their explicit awareness. The ads may initially align with the user's preferences, but as the algorithm learns more about their habits, it starts to feed content that slowly shifts their attitudes. For example, a person might begin seeing subtle political messages that align with their current views. However, as the algorithm gathers more data, it could start presenting opposing viewpoints in a palatable manner, eventually leading the individual to adopt ideas they once rejected. This mirrors the concept of nudging, where individuals are guided towards particular decisions through minor, often unnoticed interventions (Thaler & Sunstein, 2008).

This raises a critical ethical question: How much control should algorithms have over our emotional lives, and to what extent are we willing to allow them to meddle in our most intimate relationships?

Empirical studies back the claim that gradual exposure can change opinions. A study conducted by researchers at Stanford University found that algorithmic recommendations significantly impacted political beliefs, especially when users were exposed to content in small, digestible doses over time (Guess et al., 2020). The researchers concluded that slow, calculated exposure to opposing views softened resistance, eventually leading to ideological shifts.
Similarly, in a study of online shopping behavior, consumers who were repeatedly exposed to certain products via algorithmic recommendations were more likely to purchase items they initially had no interest in (Wang & Tsai, 2021). This suggests that algorithms not only understand our preferences but can actively shape them by exploiting our psychological vulnerabilities.
